What is the difference between mental health coaching and therapy?
While mental health coaching and therapy are similar, there are a few key differences.
As a mental health coach, I cannot diagnose mental illnesses. However, my personal and professional experience makes me unique from other coaches. Due to my education and experience as a mental health specialist, I have the skills and certifications to provide support for various mental health concerns. I also cannot clinically treat mental illnesses or suicidality, but I can provide support and teach coping skills on how to better manage your mental health.
I chose to become a mental health coach rather than a therapist because I prefer to maintain a holistic view of my clients’ needs. Whereas therapy tends to focus solely on treating mental health concerns, coaching focuses on a holistic view of your health and wellbeing. This includes incorporating skills that address your physical, spiritual, and mental needs. In our coaching sessions we will look at you as a whole person and address your needs in every area of your life.
Another difference is, where therapy often includes addressing the past, mental health coaching is focused more on the present and the future. If you have PTSD or a history of trauma, we may address it, but we will not dive deep into it. We may look at how your trauma has impacted your present, and work on coping skills that will help you to navigate day to day life while struggling with the aftereffects of trauma.
While some coaches maintain a structured view of their sessions with clients, I prefer to match my sessions to your needs. If you prefer a more open-ended session where you lead the session and just discuss whatever you need to that day, I will meet you where you are at. If you prefer that I lead the session with a pre-planned agenda, I am happy to do so. The most important thing is that you are comfortable and that you feel that you are getting what you need out of coaching.
If your mental health concerns require a more clinical approach, I will help to refer you to other professionals who can provide you with the help that you need. What matters most to me is that your needs are being met, and I am here to guide you however I can.
